Product Spotlight: GTape for Decks that Last

Get Out of Any Sticky Situation with G-Tape

Here at Windeck, we partner with the best of the best, and that includes Nichigo G-Tape, which we can say quite literally holds the operation together.

From Humble Beginnings

Known for its hand-tear ability and residue-free removal, G-Tape is the ideal, high-quality safe tape used on our deck builds. Established 50 years ago in a coastal city in Japan, G-Tape was and is the answer to an ever-evolving industry. The product slowly but surely gained popularity in Japan. Eventually, it made its way to the United States and Europe in the 2010s. In April 2017, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation purchased the remaining shares of Nippon Gohsei, and is now full owners of the company. As of April 1, 2019, the Nichigo G-Tape product line officially moved to the Mitsubishi Chemical America group.

G-Tape refers to itself as “The Ultimate Decking Solution”, and it’s easy to see why. Its deck joist flashing tape is well-known in the decking industry for its durability, waterproofing, and self-adhering ability that extends any decking structure’s life. In fact, using the tape on the tops of joists, over ledger boards, and around posts will prevent wood rot for up to 20 years. How can you argue with that?

Whether the Weather

Living in Winnipeg and Manitoba in general, we are constantly experiencing extreme weather, which includes prolonged periods of rain, sleet, and snow. G-Tape prevents any water that gets through the decking cracks, preventing water absorption through the top member of the wood framing. For example: If I do demolition on a 25-year-old deck board, only the top 0.5” of the joist has water damage. If you can prevent the water from sitting on the dimensional lumber, the wood framing supporting the synthetic decking will last the lifespan of the decking.

It’s Simply the Test

When it comes to testing the longevity of G-Tape, we left no stone unturned. G-Tape enlisted some of its colleagues to test the limits of the tape. A Zenon UV test chamber tested if any ultraviolet rays penetrated the substrate and made it to the surface below. The tape was exposed to 180W per square metre of xenon light for three days, but there was zero penetration. The second test involved leaving the tape exposed to xenon for 45 days, and the result showed only a 30-per cent drop in tensile strength, which is the equivalent of 15 years’ UV exposure.

After using every brand on the market, G-tape simply seals the best, and has the best workability”
